by Anita Schnee, Attorney at Law
On the face of it, our job as elder-law attorneys is to help our clients hold on to what they’ve worked for all their lives, and to pass those worldly goods to the next generation when the time comes.
Attorney Mitch Cash likens his favorite part of what we do, though, to “the dash.” When our lives are over, we’re remembered by the date of our birth and the date of our death. “1962 – 2048.” With our firm’s assistance in planning to protect home and savings, our clients can then feel freer from the worry of how to pay for the demands of old age and, instead, get busy filling the space in between – the dash – with all that makes life worth living.
Our legal documents protect our clients from the unwelcome challenges that life can throw our way – unexpected expenses, accidents, illness, and the obstacles that need to be cleared away in those situations. With health-care and financial powers of attorney already in place, our clients can request the health care they want and know that their finances are protected by people whom they trust. With a well-thought-out estate plan, the next generation can be provided-for too.
With our contribution to their peace of mind, then, our clients can concentrate on filling the dash with what really matters: preserving quality of life and spirit.
To quote author Greg Keen: “They say old age is a clever thief. He steals things without you noticing, until there’s nothing left.” We want to foil that clever thief.
